About

A Botanic Spirit is Markus Hamence.

He has a long and winding love of nature. Chasing his father and grand parents around their gardens as a child and carefully studying and monitoring every move served beneficial in developing his love of the plant kingdom and foliage. Primarily his knowledge of plants come through trial & error (with many disasters) and experimentation, Markus (also a studied horticulturalist & interior designer) has learnt his skills on the ground running.

Markus (and his home of over 400+ indoor plants) has appeared over many platforms including tv show South Aussie With Cosi, Glam Adelaide, The Adelaide Advertiser, The Daily Mail and now has appeared on the new Channel Nine show as a ‘Garden Guru’ on The Garden Hustle.

A firm believer in positive energy and good vibes, Markus amplifies this in his work with an aim to create beautiful environments for people and helping to ensure good mental health all around and spreading the love, joy and happiness that we can only benefit from and need more of in the world.

A Botanic Spirit offers ‘tips & tricks’, advice and plenty of inspirational Indoor Plant, Interior imagery plus messages of lesson learnt in life so far..

WANT MORE?

Starting off his career as a studied graphic designer, Markus moved into various avenues, from studying acting with SA Casting and performing on stage, to becoming a sought after make-up artist for theatre and weddings, it has most certainly been a diverse road.

Previously mentioned, Markus also works as an Interior Designer. He has produced both residential and commercial work, from bars through to cafes with attempt to bring to life client’s visions and ideas boards with a flair and an appealing aesthetic. This took him to co-owning two Furniture, Decor, Lifestyle concept stores, Louis Bond and Black Cherry in Adelaide, SA. His ever-growing love of this industry saw him take up a role at TAFESA and currently works with them rewardingly as a lecturer teaching the qualifications Cert IV and the Diploma.

Markus also works extensively in Media and also Arts & Entertainment. He has a weekly segment on three of Adelaide’s community radio stations which covers the goings on of shows and events in town called On Your Markus. This runs in conjunction with his other website On Your Markus which draws great attention and interest on a daily basis.

His other gig is responsible for brining many artists into Adelaide for shows, most often at The Regal Theatre in Kensington Gardens, South Australia. From Rhonda Burchmore, Todd McKenney, Case Donovan right through to Wendy Matthews, Renee Geyer and Tim Campbell & Anthony Callea. Onwards there are some exciting shows lined up.

Spare time? No. You’ll find Markus under a tree in the Botanic Gardens or under a palm in Seminyak, Bali writing songs and poetry (Exciting this coming re: this in 2026).

His gusto for life and flamboyance for presenting, creating, living life happy and authentically is his staple. This is what he likes to share 🙂
